Is it just me, or is it not right for a guy to be calling a woman bad name?

I have a best friend whom is with this guy who calls he names & belittles her & shes afraid to break it off because he would hack her & slander her good name. Is there anyone besides me who believes she shouldn't put up with him any longer no matter what?
