DATING: Is it customary to have a conversation to end things or just let it "fizzle" out???

Dating steadily for a couple of months. Having w/several overnight stays and we talk or text everyday but we're not "officially" a couple. At this point, if one of us wanted to end things do we have to have a conversation or just let it fizzle?
